Synthes Deploys Agile as European PLM Solution

Leading Medical Device Company Implements Agile Following Merger to Accelerate Product Development and Facilitate Regulatory Compliance

San Jose, CA – February 8, 2006  - Agile Software Corporation (NASDAQ: AGIL), a leading provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions, today announced that Synthes, a leading global medical device company, has implemented the Agile PLM solution across its European operations. The Agile PLM solution is being used in multiple divisions including: product development, design transfer, engineering production and quality management.

Synthes develops, produces and markets instruments, implants and biomaterials for the surgical fixation, correction and regeneration of the human skeleton and its soft tissues. With more than 700 employees using the existing PLM solutions across the Group, Synthes needed to consolidate its multiple PLM solutions in Europe following the merger of Synthes-Stratec and Mathys Medical in 2004. Agile PLM was implemented to provide Synthes with a single product lifecycle management solution. Another major challenge for Synthes Europe after the merger was consolidating product lines, as many of the individual product components were the same across each company, though referenced differently in each PLM system. The task was exacerbated by having to work with two ERP systems, which made the PLM integration more complex.

“The integration of similar product portfolios being supported by two PLM systems proved a unique challenge for Synthes. Agile’s technical expertise in the PLM sector gave us confidence that its solution would address the initial challenge of consolidating two PLM systems into one unified application,” said André Geiser, manager, IT product development and production support, Synthes Europe. “With Agile PLM, we have standardized on one common PLM system that allows us to address a number of key business issues including control of documents, item management and data integration. Agile PLM has also enabled Synthes to introduce electronic signatures for all documents, which facilitates ISO and FDA compliance.”

“Agile has a strong background in the medical device sector, so we are very familiar with the manufacturing and compliance issues encountered by Synthes,” said James Aufdemberge, senior vice president, international operations at Agile. “Mergers are never easy for companies, and we are pleased that the Agile solution helped Synthes bring their two product portfolios together. We look forward to enabling Synthes to achieve and succeed with their future goals.”
