ProSTEP iViP Association Places Standards

Darmstadt, Germany, May 2004 –   ProSTEP iViP Association has made the STEP Standard for Product Data Exchange available for the globally leading modeling language UML. The specification “Product Lifecycle Management Services Version 1.0”, that has been accepted by the Object Management Group (OMG) in April, indicates the first cross-platform Model Driven Architecture standard for the automotive industry. It allows to establish real collaboration scenarios within worldwide distributed engineering based on XML.

The OMG specification results from the ProSTEP iViP Association’s project XPDI (Extended Product Data Integration). Companies from the German and European automotive industry take part in this project. The defined WebServices have been evaluated within the project and have already been successfully put to test at some of the participating companies as a part of their cross-organizational PLM infrastructure.

The standard defines a reference model for synchronous and asynchronous access on PLM-relevant data based on the information model of ISO 10303 STEP AP214 “Core Data for Automotive Mechanical Design Processes”. By using UML the reference model is independent from any implementation platform. Based on applica-tion scenarios from the product development process in automotive industry a comprehensive set of functions has been determined. The concrete implementation of these functions has now been standardized by the OMG for WebServices together with the corresponding XML schema language. “PLM Services 1.0” define services for the management of product structure and documents including positioning information for geometric models, for classification and description of configuration and change management and for process planning. Preparatory work for this specification has been performed within the successful projects PDTnet (www.pdtnet.org) and PDM-Collaborator.

The OMG standard “PLM Services Version 1.0” is available at http://www.omg.org/cgi-bin/doc?mantis/2004-04-01.
