Funai Electric Improves Time to Market, Streamlines Product Design Process with Agile

Leading consumer electronic manufacturer deploys Agile PLM across global design and manufacturing chain
San Jose, CA – May 12, 2004 –  Agile Software Corporation (Nasdaq: AGIL), a leading provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions, today announced that Funai Electric, Co. Ltd., a leading original equipment manufacturer (OEM) supplier to the consumer electronics industry, has successfully reduced product design cycle time, compressed product change cycle time, and increased visibility and collaboration capabilities across their global design and manufacturing network by implementing Agile PLM. The Agile PLM solution has been rolled out to nearly one thousand users on Funai Electric’s design and manufacturing engineering teams, located in Japan, China, Malaysia and Thailand. Funai Electric’s American subsidiary, Funai Corporation, was acknowledged in 2003 as a top supplier of consumer electronics for two of the U.S.’s biggest distributors, WalMart and Sears Roebuck. Funai manufactures consumer electronics; its brands include Emerson, Sylvania and Symphonic.

“The market for digital home electronics including DVD recorders, digital cameras and flat screen televisions is extremely competitive and time sensitive,” said Toshihiko Morita, Corporate Executive Officer at Funai Electric. “The Agile PLM solution is strengthening our design and manufacturing chain throughout Asia, improving our collaborative global network and ensuring our competitive advantage.”

Communication and collaboration among geographically dispersed engineers was difficult because there was no common infrastructure in place to share information. Product reworks were time consuming and paper-based. With the implementation of Agile PLM, Funai now has the infrastructure in place to track and share product record information across their extended design and manufacturing teams, and are seeing value in three key areas:

  • Managing the product record—Rich product definition capabilities enable Funai to create, share and maintain product information, resulting in getting products to market much more quickly, increased productivity, improved quality, lower product development and material costs.
  • Change collaboration—Best practice change management and product collaboration streamline the product change process, enabling users to easily create and approve product changes in a systematic way. Change collaboration shortens change cycle times, reduces manufacturing costs, improves product quality and accelerates the implementation of high impact revisions that enhance product features.
  • Visibility across multiple organizations—With the Agile solution, Funai is able to provide visibility and control over product information to globally distributed design and manufacturing organizations.

“For Funai Electric, time to market is a critical factor for maintaining leadership in a highly competitive industry, where margin pressure is a way of life,” said Jay Fulcher, Agile president and COO. “We’re pleased that Funai has adopted the Agile solution to help manage their product record across their design and manufacturing network, and is already seeing positive results. We look forward to expanding our relationship with Funai in the future.”
