Dassault Systèmes Announces PLM Industry Solution for Aerospace

“Best of Breed Structure Engineering” solution increases productivity and cuts costs in critical phase of aircraft development

Seattle, Washington – September 30, 2003 – Dassault Systèmes (Nasdaq: DASTY, Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA) today announced a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) industry solution for aerospace manufacturers based on proven DS PLM Practices. The Best of Breed Structure Engineering (BOBSE) solution integrates the activities and processes required to design and manufacture structural aircraft parts and assemblies (sheetmetal, machined, and composite parts) as well as the corresponding tools required to build them.

Based on the most widely-used aerospace product lifecycle management solutions, CATIA®, DELMIA™, and ENOVIA™, BOBSE deploys proven best practices that enable customers to ramp up to full productivity in less time and get the most out of both their existing intellectual property and their PLM V5 investment.

The relational design capabilities of BOBSE enable early communication between design, manufacturing and service engineering teams. It allows manufacturers to constantly monitor performance and costs implications of design decisions between these teams to increase design iterations while reducing late engineering changes.

BOBSE advances common methods and processes across the extended enterprise to facilitate collaboration and link innovation to development. Furthermore, it sustains continuous improvement to intellectual property to maximize and reuse it on derivative programs.

"Dassault Systèmes unique understanding of the engineering demands within the aerospace industry gives us the tools and best practices that enable our innovative people to reach new levels of productivity in building and delivering a superior aircraft that consistently exceeds our customer's expectations," said Jeff Schiesser, Director Business Integration at Cessna Aircraft Company.

“Dassault Systèmes has spent years working very closely with its aerospace customers to understand their needs and ensure that our PLM solutions provide the means to successfully produce aircrafts, and will continue to expand the understanding of industry needs with the recently created IBM aerospace competency center,” said Marcelo Lemos, Worldwide Aerospace Industry Executive, Dassault Systèmes. “It is through this experience and our investment on the optimization of aerospace processes, based on our products, that we developed BOBSE for the critical structure engineering phase of aircraft development.”

A Dassault Systèmes Industry Solution is a combination of Dassault Systèmes PLM Practices, based on PLM products, that implement proven methodologies to reduce implementation time and risk while increasing productivity, profitability, and rapid return on investment. Industry Solutions are delivered through implementation services.

Kfar Saba, Israel - September 8, 2003 - SmarTeam Corporation Ltd., a Dassault Systèmes company (Nasdaq: DASTY; Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA) announced today that Esmena Ltd. has implemented SMARTEAM® product data management (PDM) software to optimize its bidding response time and improve its global reach. A case study detailing the Esmena implementation is available from SmarTeam.

An international leader in sophisticated warehouse storage systems, Esmena has engineering centers and distributors across 50 countries and manufacturing sites on three continents. The company uses SMARTEAM in all project phases, including preparation of sales quotations, collaborative design, engineering change orders, manufacturing, and field support -- even factory personnel access the SMARTEAM system on the shop floor. SMARTEAM manages the company’s legacy 2D drawings and 3D CAD files and provides a single repository for the company’s rich archive of product data and customer requirements.

“SMARTEAM isn’t just product data management, it integrates the whole company,” said Jesus Fernandez, R&D Director at Esmena. “SMARTEAM links all our widely dispersed groups and facilities. We are leveraging SMARTEAM’s capabilities in project workflow, web-based collaboration, and information and project management.”

Survival and growth in the fiercely competitive customized storage industry revolves around rapid, precise bidding, and quick, responsive turnarounds. Esmena found that its bidding efforts were a lengthy process, hampered by the need to leverage its vast and geographically distributed volume of information.

“SMARTEAM is a collaborative enabler that lets separate groups behave as one,” said Fernandez. “The technology enables us to collaborate over the web, access up-to-date information quickly, and move projects forward,” regardless of geographical location. Not only are the engineering processes faster and the design process optimized, but costs are lowered through increased efficiencies and far fewer mistakes are made.”

In the future, Esmena hopes to achieve further business efficiency and growth by expanding its SMARTEAM lifecycle collaboration solution to link with the ERP system currently being implemented and to include collaboration with customers, suppliers, and additional business partners. Summing up, Fernandez stated, “The technology is of strategic value for us to operate competitively as a global enterprise.”
