Press reports September 2002 deal with EDM/PDM

Boston, Mass., September, 26, 2002 -
The biggest risk for users approaching a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) strategy today is to bet on a foundation that cannot be well mapped to the needs of their industry. Although PLM vendors exhibit similar levels of functionality, their industry-specific nature makes vendor selection risky. The AMR Research Report, “Product Lifecycle Management: What’s Real Now,” serves as a guide to help companies use domain knowledge, technology, and reference strength to differentiate vendors. The report also serves as the launch pad for AMR Research’s new PLM Service, which will help companies manage the process of bringing a product to market and continuously improving it through retirement.
The goal of PLM is to improve communication between factions of a company that are often at odds with each other, including manufacturing, engineering, design, purchasing, sales, and marketing. To reach this goal, the foundation of a company’s PLM strategy must be based on a flexible Product Data Management (PDM) platform that supports core customer value and addresses three critical technology challenges: Business Process Modeling, Data Architecture, and Scalability.

EDS today announced the implementation by Messier-Dowty of EDS’ Teamcenter Enterprise product lifecycle management (PLM) software to provide more than 350 engineers at the aircraft landing gear manufacturer’s United Kingdom (UK) facilities with ready access to up-to-date product information.
Messier-Dowty is the world leader in the design, development, manufacture and support of aircraft landing gear systems. In addition to its facilities in Gloucester in the UK, the company has operations in other parts of Europe, North America and Asia.
Under the software and services contract, terms of which were not disclosed, EDS PLM Solutions has supplied and implemented the Teamcenter Enterprise collaboration foundation and Part Family Manager (PFM) software modules from its Teamcenter product lifecycle management and collaboration software suite. The contract also calls for ongoing software support services.
Intended to replace a number of existing, disparate data management systems currently in use at Messier-Dowty, Teamcenter Enterprise will eventually be used to support configuration management and change control during the product development process. However, in phase 1 of the system roll-out it provides view-only access to design information generated on Messier-Dowty’s CAD/CAM system. In later phases of its implementation, Teamcenter Enterprise will be interfaced to Catia and other authoring systems to provide integrated control of the product development process.

EDS today announced a contract with the UK-based team responsible for the design and development of sections of the fuselage of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) -- the next-generation fighter aircraft currently being developed for the United States Department of Defence, the UK Ministry of Defence and other nations by a multi-national team led by Lockheed Martin.
The contract, terms of which were not disclosed, represents Phase 2 of an Information Technology (IT) systems development programme designed to enable the UK-based JSF design team at BAE Systems’ Warton and Salmesbury sites to collaborate effectively with its other JSF Program partners around the world. Phase 1 of the programme saw the implementation of EDS’ Teamcenter Enterprise product lifecycle management (PLM) software to manage and provide secure access to the JSF Program common product information database.
Now, in Phase 2, EDS is to provide and implement software to integrate design data from the UK team’s CAD/CAM system into the Teamcenter-enabled JSF product database. Initially this will support around 150 concurrent Catia users in the UK but this figure is expected to grow to some 500 users, including non-CAD users, by the end of the year.
